about me
My name is Brittany Wilson, I’m an American and live in downtown Sacramento with my husband and our two young kids. I studied Spanish and Mandarin Chinese in college, and linguistics in graduate school. After school I joined AmeriCorps, then worked for a couple of nonprofits, and then started working for the state of California. I have a Now page1 for more up-to-the-month-ish updates about what we are doing. I'm in my 40s and very busy with kid activities and hobby meetups, but I work a computer job which leaves me with a lot of time to use the computer and keep up with emails and such, which I enjoy.
interests
I have too many hobbies to be actively involved with all of them at one, so they will be unevenly written about on this blog.
I enjoy studying languages, and at my age I probably am not going to start from scratch anymore, but I have studied Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Esperanto, Ukrainian, and French. Weirdly Mandarin is my strongest language for spontaneous speech (because of the studying abroad) and I plan to teach it to both my kids. I'm a big believer in comprehensible input as a learning method and really wish it was as readily available when I was in college.
I learned to knit in the pandemic and I learned to crochet in 2025. My favorite things to make and socks and hats but I'm trying to branch out into more complicated projects. I'm pretty good to people in real life, probably low-intermediate in the big pond of the Internet.
I like reading, mostly science fiction, and I also like creative writing. I have zero interest in marketing or every publishing any of my own work so I'm considering posting my short stories on Bear blog.
I follow the politics of my country very closely, and have a lot of opinions about them. I don't want to post about them here, because it's such a grim subject, so I mostly post about them on Mastadon and Bluesky. I'm a dedicated member of the Democratic Party and vote in every single election. I'm also a member of SEIU but am not very involved with it beyond voting, something I sometimes think about changing.
website aim
I’ve been a poster my entire life (it feels like) but I’m trying to do less of that on social media and more in my own private corner; I’m also taking a stab at hosting some Internet services myself to keep my family out of that mess. Once my kids are older I’ll be thinking more about parenting them around these things! I hate the phrase "intentional living" because it sounds so corporate but I do find myself writing about topics like that a fair amount.
